  • February 2, 9, 16 & 23 – Toddler Treks  10 – 10:45 a.m. | Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserv

Spending time outside is one of the best ways to nurture curiosity and instill a

love of the natural world. Bring your young ones and join OC Parks staff to learn

all about Upper Newport Bay. Toddler Treks is offered every Friday and includes

a story time, age-appropriate hike and themed craft. Each week will focus on a

different topic that encourages young ones to learn about the outdoors. The

program begins at the Peter and Mary Muth Interpretive Center. Program content

is tailored for ages 2-5, but all are welcome to attend. Please wear comfortable

attire and closed-toe shoes. Advance registration required.

  • February 3 – Keep it Wild: Aliso and Wood Canyons

9 a.m. – 12 p.m. | Aliso & Wood Canyons Wilderness Park

Join OC Parks and Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteers to create a healthier

habitat for native plants and wildlife at Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park.

Volunteers will assist with various stewardship activities including removing non-

native plants, creek clean-up or planting native plants. No experience necessary

and tools will be provided. Please wear long pants, closed-toe shoes and sun

protection and bring water. Participants must be at least 16 years old. Ages 16

and 17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times. Advance

registration required. Parking is free.

  • February 9 & 17 – Guided Mindful Nature Walk

9 – 11 a.m. | Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve

Join OC Parks staff and volunteers to observe the sights, sounds and smells of

nature during an intimate nature walk led by a certified Nature and Forest

Therapy Guide. Through a series of invitations, you will be encouraged to explore

in the present moment and deepen your connection with nature. Experience the

benefits of spending time outdoors in a mindful way during a lovely morning at

Upper Newport Bay. Please note this is a slow-paced program that is designed

for ages 16 and older. Advance registration required.

  • February 10 – Native Garden Restoration

8 – 10 a.m. | Ralph B. Clark Regional Park

Join our efforts to remove invasive mustard and water native plants as we work

toward restoring healthy habitat areas at Clark Regional Park. This activity will

meet at the south side of parking lot A near the bridge. No experience necessary

and all tools will be provided. Please wear long pants, closed-toe shoes, sun

protection and bring water. Minors age 16 and younger must have a legal

guardian present at all times. Walk-ins are welcome, however advance

registration is recommended.

  • February 10 – Paint & (Bring Your Own) Wine Nite: Love in the Wild

5 – 6:30 p.m. | OC Zoo at Irvine Regional Park

This program is for adults 21 and older only. Are you looking for a great date idea

of a fun time with friends? Join us after hours at the OC Zoo for an evening of

creative fun! Learn about courtship and mating in the animal world in this

Valentine-themed program. You’ll also meet zoo animals up close! Bring your

own wine and glass to enjoy during the program. We kindly ask that you please

drink responsibly. Enjoy paining and potting two mini animal succulent planters.

All art materials are supplied. This program is free and phone registration is

required. Parking is $5 per vehicle on weekends.

  • February 10 & 24 – Wilderness Access Day: Gypsum Canyon Wilderness

8 a.m. – 2 p.m. | Gypsum Canyon Wilderness

Come explore OC Parks’ newest trails at Gypsum Canyon Wilderness through

this self-guided opportunity. Located within OC Parks’ Irvine Ranch Open Space,

Gypsum Canyon Wilderness features 6 miles of new trails for hiking, mountain

biking and horseback riding. Two lookout points offer sweeping views of the

surrounding canyons and unique prehistoric rock formations, while seven new

trails provide multiple loop options that vary in distance and range from easy to

moderate in difficulty. Gypsum Canyon Wilderness is comprised of protected and

preserved native habitats that a variety of wildlife, including mule deer, red-tailed

hawks, California gnatcatchers and bobcats, call home. Advance registration

required.

  • February 11 – Second Sunday Restoration

9 – 11:30 a.m. | Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve

Join Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve staff and volunteers in enhancing the

Bay’s habitat for local wildlife. Activities may include non-native plant removal,

planting natives, watering, trash cleanup, and Butterfly Garden maintenance. No

experience necessary! Please bring a hat, sunscreen, snacks and a refillable

water bottle. Water and tools are provided. Walk-ins are welcome but space is

limited so advance registration is recommended.

  • February 14 – Critter Investigation: Loving Barn Owls

10 – 11 a.m. | Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve

OC Parks invites you to learn more about one of our common nocturnal animals:

the loving barn owl. Participants will have an opportunity to learn more about

these amazing creatures, as well as how barn owls care for their young. This fun

and engaging program includes a story time, age-appropriate hike and themed

craft. The program begins at the Peter and Mary Muth Interpretive Center.

Program content is tailored for the preschool level (ages 2-5), but all are welcome

to attend. Please wear comfortable attire and closed-toe shoes. Advance

registration required.

  • February 15 – Little Explorers

9:30 – 10:30 a.m. | William R. Mason Regional Park

Join OC Park Naturalists for story time and a short hike with your little ones at

Mason Regional Park. Our theme for this month is animal homes! This program

is geared towards ages 3-6 but all are welcome. Minors under age 16 must be

accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times. This program begins near the

lake, closest to parking lot C. Advance registration required.

  • February 16 – Tot Walk

9 – 10:30 a.m. | Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park

Join OC Parks naturalists and bring your young ones (infant to age 3) to explore

Aliso’s wild backyard. Take a leisurely stroll through the garden and the creek.

We will see bugs, plants and birds while exploring! OC Parks staff may even lead

a game or introduce a local resident to the children. Come join the fun! This

program begins at the Aliso and Wood Visitor Center at Aliso and Wood Canyons

Wilderness Park. Please wear closed-toe shoes and bring snacks and water.

Please note most of the trail is not stroller friendly. Advance registration required.

  • February 17 - Wilderness Access Day: Saddleback Wilderness

8 a.m. – 2 p.m. | Saddleback Wilderness

Come explore 3.3 miles of new trails at Saddleback Wilderness, part of OC

Parks’ Irvine Ranch Open Space, through this self-guided opportunity.

Designated trails will be open for self-guided hiking, biking and equestrian use.

There are multiple trail loop options which vary in distance and level of difficulty.

Choices range from an easy 1-mile loop to multiple figure-8 configurations for

those looking to maximize their mileage. Access is first come, first served until

parking capacity is reached. No registration required. Rain or inclement weather

will cancel the program.

  • February 17 – Ocean Odyssey for Ages 7-10

10:30 – 11:30 a.m. | OC Zoo at Irvine Regional Park

This program is for ages 7-10 only. Come learn about animals found in the sea!

Class includes hands-on learning, fun crafts, and meeting zoo creatures up close!

Cost is $5 per child (one parent included). Phone registration is required. Parking

fee is $5 per car on weekends.
